IMPAIRED DRIVING PENALTIES ONTARIO

In addition to a criminal record, a conviction for DUI will have the following minimum penalties:

First offence
  • A one year driver’s licence suspension
  • A fine of at least $1,000
Second offence
  • A three year driver's licence suspension
  • A jail sentence of 30 days
Third offence
  • A lifelong driving prohibition
  • A jail sentence of 120 days

A criminal record for DUI may affect your employment opportunities if you need a criminal background check or you drive for a living. A conviction may also prevent your entry into other countries.

With any conviction of DUI or impaired driving, your vehicle insurance may increase to more than $4,500 a year, for three years. In addition, you will have to pay the fees for the installation of the interlock device, a device which only starts your vehicle after you provide a breath sample.
